Anne B. Newman, MD, MPH and Joe M. Zmuda, PhD, Co-Principal Investigators
Dr. Newman is Professor and Chair of Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Aging and Population Health (CAPH) in the Graduate School of Public Health. She is a geriatrician and epidemiologist who is internationally renowned for her work in the epidemiology of aging, longevity and disability. Dr. Newman’s studies of subclinical cardiovascular disease document its strong relationship to declines in health and function that had been previously attributed to aging itself. This research has established the clear potential for old age to be a productive and active period of life that far exceeds previous expectations.
Dr. Zmuda has over 20 years of experience in research including all areas of epidemiological research with a particular emphasis on molecular and genetic epidemiology. His laboratory has extensive experience in the design and analysis of family- and population-based genetic analysis, candidate gene association studies including DNA extraction, amplification and banking, DNA sequence analysis to identify novel variants, admixture analysis, functional analysis of genetic variants in cell culture and genetic association analysis. His research group has been studying the genetics and epidemiology of osteoporosis and also has a particular interest in understanding the genetics of musculoskeletal related phenotypes. Dr. Zmuda has served since the LLFS inception on the Laboratory and Phenotype Committees and provides insight and expertise in the area of genetic epidemiology.
